
SPC Jerry Allen Hiemer
Specialist 4 Jerry Allen Hiemer, who joined the U.S. Army from Tennessee, was a machine gunner with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On November 17, 1965, the battalion was in positions in the Ia Drang Valley, Pleiku Province when elements of the North Vietnamese Army ambushed the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment and SP4 Hiemer and his assistant gunner were last seen in the vicinity of (GC) YA 943 043. On November 18 and 19, U.S. forces searched the battle area but found no trace of either man, but on November 24, the assistant gunner was found alive and severely wounded. He reported that when last together, SP4 Hiemer was shot in the head. Later attempts to locate and recover his remains have been unsuccessful. Today, Specialist 4 Hiemer is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
